Chapter 4: The Role of Design in Estimatingently

At Trends Kitchen & Bathroom Specialists, we know that great design is the backbone of an accurate estimate. Without a clear plan, numbers are just guesses. With a design in place, every fixture, tile, and detail has a purpose—and a price attached to it. That’s how we give our clients estimates that are realistic, dependable, and directly tied to their vision.

Why Design Matters

A remodel without a design is like a blueprint without dimensions—impossible to execute with precision. Design does more than help you visualize your space; it ensures that every selection and every labor task is accounted for.

When a design is complete:

- Tile square footage can be measured exactly.

- Fixture placement is determined, which drives plumbing and electrical work.

- Storage solutions (like niches, vanities, and shelving) are clearly identified.

- Finishes such as paint, trim, and flooring are scoped accurately.

That clarity translates directly into a proposal that you can trust.

Moving Beyond Guesswork

Too many contractors provide a price based on a vague description: “new shower,” “replace vanity,” or “update lighting.” The problem is, those phrases don’t mean the same thing to everyone.

For us, “new shower” could mean:

- A basic 3x3 fiberglass insert.

- A fully tiled walk-in with frameless glass.

- A custom spa shower with multiple body sprays.

Each one carries a completely different cost. Only through design can we nail down which version is right for you—and what it will truly cost.

Case Study: Designing for Accuracy

A client came to us wanting to update their Jack and Jill bathroom. Initially, they requested “new tile in the tub surround and a new vanity.” Without a design, that could have been estimated anywhere from $20,000 to $35,000.

Once we developed a design, the picture became clear:

- Tile layout included a full-height porcelain surround with a decorative mosaic band.

- A floating double vanity with quartz countertops was chosen.

- Two undermount sinks with Kohler widespread faucets were specified.

- Lighting was shifted to wall sconces beside each mirror.

Because every selection was tied to a design, the estimate came in at $28,750 (mid-range). And when construction began, the final invoice matched the estimate—with no hidden surprises.

Why We Include Design in the Estimate Process

We don’t treat design as an upsell—it’s part of how we ensure accuracy. By showing you layouts, fixture placements, and tile patterns, we eliminate assumptions and give you confidence in your investment.

Design is the bridge between your ideas and our craftsmanship. It guarantees that your estimate is more than a number—it’s a reflection of your future space.
